Halloween Theme Song-John Carpenter
This recording is one of my favorite inspirational works. The instrumentation is very simple but effective, using only synthesizer instruments to create the suspense in the song.
The low budget film required low budget music, the theme song was focusing on rhythm and repetition.
The electronic metronome-like rattling sound gives the pace and then comes the synthesized piano repeating the same melody with transpositions up or down the scale. The time signature is 5/4, which creates a rather unusual sense of instability in the piece.
John Carpenter's works are simple, not over-complicated, yet very effective in its genre. The synthesizer gave a great opportunity to create music without using several instruments as it had a wide selection of sound effects and sample library to work with.
Halloween was targeted to scare teenagers and Carpenter managed to do it with his music that used a simple melody, transposed it down a couple of tones a couple of times and with its repetition created a tension, a never ending feeling of the coming of horrifying events. A classic that everybody recognizes and a successful compositional method inspired many composers since.
